CDs No Longer Playing in Media Player

Windows MediaPlayer7 suddenly quit playing CDs or any online content.
The player freezed up upon launch and had to be closed with
Ctrl+Alt+Del. CDs play in CDPlayer. I uninstalled and reinstalled
MediaPlayer 7 with no luck. I then uninstalled it again and tried
using Media Player 6.4.07.1124 which gives me a 80040265 error saying
the format is not supported.

In MediaPlayer 6, under Options>Formats CDs are not listed and I have
no idea how to add them. I reviewed my file type associations under
My Computer and had two CD File types. On Audio CD was mis-associated
with .midi files. The system let me change it to .cda but when I
exited and returned to check it the settings had reverted back to
..midi again, so I deleted the association. The other CD Audio Track
was assocated with .cda file types but with CDPlayer. I deleted that
as well. So now I have no associations with .cda file types (CDPlayer
still plays CDs) and Window Media Player still won't play CDs.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows 98 (older
version). Thanks!

No, unfortunately, I'm running Windows 98 so I'm unable to go any
higher than version 7. Thanks for the response though!
