Microtek scanner prevents boot or shut down

I got a new scanner (Scanmaker 5900) recently and after
much fiddling I've found that I cannot boot or shut down
unless I unplug the USB cord from the scanner. The system
will hang until I pull the cord and once disconnected, the
system responds normally within about 5-6 seconds.

I've been told by friends that I must have a driver
problem, but I'm not sure what other drivers to use. I've
not found any fix on the Microtek website.

You may not find a fix on the Microtek web site, but you should find their
latest driver versions. See the version you are using matches the latest
version offered up on Microtek's site. I've been using Microtek scanners off
and on for a couple of years now and I haven't experienced any problems with
their driver packages (but I haven't looked at the 5900).

Even if the versions are a match, I still recommend you:
1. disconnect the device from the computer
2. reboot your computer and then make sure any Microtek programs are not
running
when you start-up (check Task Manager)
2. uninstall any software that applied to the Microtek scanner
3. reboot
4. once you've logged in, then follow Microtek's instruction for installing
the
TWAIN driver (for instance some vendors want you to install their software
only BEFORE you plug in the device to your computer).

good luck!

I have the same problem with a Brother multifunction
printer/ scanner. I found out that when I plug in the
Brother, three new USB hardware devices are seen (while
in Control Panel/System/ Hardware Tab/Device Manager).
After about 1 minute, one of them, USB Mass Storage has a
problem. I have searched Brother for the problem, but
did not find it. Maybe it is a Microsoft problem if you
are having the same thing.
