Getting MicroTek scanner to work with its own software after upgrade to Vista.

I'm reposting this in a new thread. Any help with this would be appreciated:

I'm making a (very) little progress with the
scanner: it looks like the problem is that different programs are competing
for the device, and this is stopping the manufacturer's program (Scanwizard
5) from working
properly (it starts then hangs). I can use the scanner with the "Windows Fax
and Scan" program. This looks OK, but I'd prefer to use the Microtek
Scanmaker software anyway. So, I turned off the Fax And Scan feature,
re-booted (why is this *still* necessary??) and then found that OneNote is
trying to take it over! This is especially irritating since I'd turned it
off in XP - this is another setting that the upgrade ignored/overwrote.
Anyway, rather than keep turning off Windows features, is there a way to
tell Windows that the only program I want associated with the scanner is
ScanMaker 5? I looked at the Program Defaults feature, but I couldn't find
it there.

Update: I couldn't get it to work with the Microtek softeware :(

Whenever I tried to use the ScanMaker program (several different versions
tried), the Fax & Scan software appeared, and they seemed to lock each other
out of using the device. The Fax & Scan often kept giving an error dialog in
a loop, and had to be End Tasked. So I've unloaded ScanMaker and I can use
the scanner with Fax & Scan, but it looks inferior and I also can't use the
buttons on the scanner itself (eg to photocopy used to be a matter of
pressing a single button; now I've got to Scan and Print).

I'm pretty sure that Snamaker would work if left to its own devices (pun
intended), I don't believe the drivers a incompatible per se, but the
intrusive nature of Fax & Scan prevents it from working. It's a shame that
it isn't possible to configure a profile in Fax & Scan that stops it from
using a device.

If anyone's hit the same problem and been more successful I'd be interested
to know!

Regards,
Arfur
