Microsoft Windows XP Automatic Updates Always Fail

The automatic updates I should be getting from microsoft for Windows XP
always fail. Got any ideas why?

There's not a single cause for failure. Is it failure to download, failure at install, or ?
Are you observing the process when it fails? If so, what message do you see?

Is there any specific updates that fail....that you can remember?

It would be easier for you to go to Windows Update and see if that process works.
Select Windows Update from the main menu--> All programs menu.

If you get an error there, please write all down verbatim (with 'error' number notations) and post it back here.

Do you have SP2 installed?
If you do, open a command prompt and type this (1 line at a time):

net stop wuauserv
del /f /s /q "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\*.*"
net start wuauserv

see if that works.
