Cannot Install Auto Update KB951847

I am using Windows Professional XPSP3. I have turned Automatic Update on.
Have had no trouble downloading and updating XP with this method until I
attempted to update KB951847, which always fails: during updatin I get the
following error:
"Initializing installation... done!

Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework
3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 (update 1
of 1)... "

Half way through the update it fails. If I try and shut the computer and
allow updates to be installed at shutdown, the update either fails or the
computer seems to be in an endless loop. Any help greatly appreciated. Also
posted to "xp general support group." Thanks.

Thanks for the information, it was right on! But for most users, I suggest
they call on the Microsoft free helpline (1866 PC SAFETY) for assistance in
solving this problem, as it is a bear. This is one of the few instances
where you can actually get free assistance from Microsoft, so why not take
advantage of it, since not all the suggestions below actually solve the
problem. It took a good two hours on the phone with two of their techs to
eliminate the problem, which only produced another problem that they had to
escalate to a higher level technician to solve. Thanks again.
