Microsoft update

My MS update seems to be broken - anyone got any hints?

It used to work, but recently I get the little yellow shield saying it is
downloading updates, but it stays at 0%. I can go to the MS website and
update, but the update bit seems to be broken.

I'm not sure if it is relevant but at about the same time, I seem to have
problems with my Sophos anti-virus update - when it says it tries to contact
the sophos server, it says it fails. But I can uninstall Sophos and reinstall
and it brings down the most up to date version, with the same credentials -
but subsequent updates don't work.

I Use XP MCE 2005. It is up to date. I use the XP firewall (and no other) -
but the same affect occurs when I switch the firewall off.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

You are in the wrong group -
Search in that clunky web interface you are using for windowsupdates, or use
newsreaders to post in the below group

Microsoft Update and Automatic Updates are not the same thing.

Can you install these updates manually at Windows Update?
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

You may have a hijackware infection.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks for the reply.

It is Microsoft Update I'm using (or trying to). I used to use Windows
update, but switched a few months ago (I don't think my failures are linked
to that, but who knows?).

Yes, I can manually update MS if I go their web site. It's just the
automatic stuff that gets stuck at 0%.

I can't manually update Sophos - unless I uninstall and then reinstall.

I was wondering if there was a service involved Windows update that might
need re-starting or something?

Yes, I can manually update MS if I go their web site. It's just the
automatic stuff that gets stuck at 0%.

First, switch back to Windows Update and see if that makes any difference:
Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check) .

If no joy...
