Microsoft SLOW in Solving CD-R IMPORTANT problem in XP SP2

I don't think it is responsible or considerate for MIcrosoft to deprive its
users of an importan tool which is of burning and viewing burned data on
CDs. Many have made backups of their systems on CD-Rs but will be surprised
when they pop that CD and find NOTHING after they install SP2. Also we are
surprised when we want to burn a cd and find that now it is impossible. The
CD drive works in all other respects.

I am using a Sony Vaio PCG-NV170, XP Professional SP2, DVD/CD-RW Drive

Hi,
My first thought would be to check to see if the IMAPI service is running.
To do this, right click on My Computer and select Manage. Then on the left
hand side, choose Services and Applications, then Services. Scroll down to
the IMAPI service and double click it. If it has stopped, start it by
clicking on Start. Also, choose Automatic from the drop down list.
Clickout of everything and see if you can burn a CD now.

Please report back here and let us know if that worked for you.

I've never seen anything that says Microsoft believes this is a problem with
their software. Other then personal opinions have you run across something
official that does? They won't make any effort to fix something that they
don't consider a problem. I've seen lots of posts here asking for help on
DVD or CD drives not working but no real solution to it.

Yes, Msoft says it is a problem with their software in articles from MS
support: 899527 899527 etc. THE CD-R I created with XP SP1 can NOT be READ
with XP SP2, yet it can be read with Windows ME! Also can not burn CD-Rs.

I read dozens of related articles and there is no answer anywhere except as
the articles I mentioned above say : Call Support or wait years for SP3.

Your last statement about lots of postings without solution says it ALL.

I read many articles and yes I came across that one about the IMAPI service
stopped. No luck. But yes it was stopped and I started, set it to automatic
restart etc. Nothing worked.

Microsoft does not put much effort in CD-R writing utilities because
there are many, many programs already on the market. When you buy a
new CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-RW drive they usually come with software to wright
to CD/DVD.

Both my the DVD-RW DL Recorders came with NERO, but I don't like it,
much too bloated and very hard to uninstall. I use another program to
wright to CD.

The reason MSoft should support it is that most laptops do not come with
third party CD creator software and that this feature is critical. Backup
files, Presentations, collaboration, disributions etc depends on this feature
and makes one very angry when a feature you once had it disappears on the
NEXT SERVICE PACK which is suppose to solve problmes not create NEW ONES.

Which CD creator do you use?? Thanks - DLexa

That is nonsense. All laptops I have bought that have CD writers have
come with burning software.

Really? Someone gave me this Sony Vaio it has everything it seems but no
CD burner software. Perhaps it had a CD with burning software and the buyer
did not install it.

I thought that if one buys off the shelf a DVD CD-RW drive one would get a
nice software all others had to live with what the OS ( Windows XP) itself
provided.

Thanks.
