CD-Rom and XP2

After installing the XP SP2 my CD-ROM Drive (Matshita CD-RW, CW-8121)
doesn't read (or has great difficulties) the formerly readable CDs. I tried
to delete and reinstal the drivers for DVD and IDE controllers in the save
mode, but after rebooting it doesn't get better.
Upon contacting the Matshita I got the answer from them:
"It is a problem of the Read performance of Drive or Media."
Does anybody know how to change or influence the reading performance of a CD
Drive, or is there a trick in XP that may bypass the problem?
Thanks

I have a similar problem - two systems networked wirelessly - both showing
the same glitch - media inserted into either CD, DVD or 3.5" will not get
recognized by XP file system (shows as an empty disk) An empty disk into
either the cd burner or dvd burner will automatically pickup and allow me to
burn a disk but still won't recognized the data once reinserted???

Was working fine, but then just went bad, one computer at a time. Have
tried reinstalling drivers and seitching cable attachments - nothing helps?
