Brian,

That would be like having to reinstall the BIOS after a fresh install of XP,
it's just not true, dude, besides it's on it's own ROM chip on the mobo..
Firmware is flashed onto a ROM chip (as is a bios update) located on the
Optical drives circuit board..
Cheers for the New Year..

Brian,

So far, XP has installed automatically after rebooting, signed generic MS
drivers for my optical drives, same four every time.. So, I guess I'm
wondering what drivers your thinking of, that the OP would need to
load/reinstall manualy..?
Just curious..
Cheers

Are you trying to burn a CD or a DVD? What burning software are you using?

If you are trying to burn a DVD using the built-in burning software in
Windows XP, you can *not* do this. It can burn CDs, but not DVDs. You need
third-party software to do this.

The generic drivers don't work for all drives all of the time, installing
drivers/firmware/software supplied by the drives manufacturer does/can resolve
issues. I'm very happy to see that your mileage is better than others with the
generic drivers installed and hope your new year was a good one in transition.
