microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics folders

I presently subscribe to just this Microsoft newsgroup.

Whenever I open its folder, the highlighted number (in brackets) after the
group's name, which shows how many messages are unread), will often not
relate to the actual unread messages. For example, the highlighted number
can be 24 but there can be as few as 4 or 5 actual unread messages.

Sometimes, when there are no actual unread messages, there is a highlighted
number showing. If I close the folder and then immediately open it, the
highlighted number will often change to a different number.

Using the "Catch Up" facility does not stop this happening.

It's no big problem, just annoying.

Advice much appreciated.

I use thunderbird about a year now, and its been doing this to me too.
So I'm not sure its your OE doing it. It might just be the way the
server reports header counts. I'll get new folders with 10,000
headers and then only download 8,000+. I've never seen #'s and then
nothing. But I do see #'s that change.

Thanks for the reply. I only get it occuring in this MS group not in any BT
group.
Is it the same with you?

I never put anything logic to it. I just know I have to almost ignore
the numbers. They are close, 100 may mean 90 but its just a gauge that
there are messages. Lately in microsoft.public.windows.moviemaker I've
been getting #'s and yet here are none. Maybe I'm just noticing it
since you started asking and I'm more aware of it.

Great for others, I have thunderbird though. And it's doing the same
thing. Its right when I refresh, which is basically what the link you
gave suggests. Not much of a fix, but at least we're not crazy.

This is a bug caused by the MD servers getting out of synch. Doesn't show
up in all news readers. Nothing you can do about it.

Many thanks for info. I can stop looking for a cure, now.

You're point being that Microsoft have more than one news server whereas
other providers may rely on a single server?

True. But I was suggesting that he look at the site which would perhaps
give a clue as to what was causing the problem. But, it was a false lead
anyway which I soon found out, and which Frank Saunders put right for me. I
hope I didn't cause inconvenience for anyone with that useless piece of
info.

Not really. Just if they are usinf a server farm where you don't see the
problem they keep them in synch better.
