microsoft office program that windows xp will accept

Recently purchased HP Pavilion that came factory loaded.
No program disks. It has Windows XP and I assumed it had
Word, which I have been using for several years. Have
written two books with it as well as numerous other
written files. Microsoft Publisher which works in
conjunction with Word is a very important program in my
word processing. There are many files I wish to transfer
from my old pc to the new.

The HP came with WordPerfect. Several attempts at loading
my Office 97 from my previously successful disk resulted
in it stopping at the point of beginning the data transfer.

Am I faced with the expensive job of obtaining a newer
version of Office? I would like to take the least
expensive route possible. The prospect of having trouble
with other program disks does not make me too happy,
either.

If you have Office 97 full, not upgrade it should install
just fine and run under XP. If your Office CDs are upgrade
CDs they require a qualifying product path. But the Corel
WP you have is newer than the Office 97 and it probably
isn't seen as an upgrade path.

If you need to purchase a new version of Office and you want
Publisher too, be sure to check which version you are
getting. Publisher is NOT part of the standard or
professional Office package. You can get the upgrade
versions and use your Office 97 CD as proof for the install.

Versions of Office that include Publisher are often Office
Small Business edition which is usually an OEM bundle, and
that might be the reason it won't install on your new
machine.

You can buy Word without buying the entire Office package.
If the M$ Pub. you have is compat. with the current version
of Word, that might save you a few $s.
