Windows XP Pro will not load

Tony

Hi,
My laptops small hardrive has failed. I obtained a used but fully working
40gb drive, formatted it and error-check it on my desktop also running W/XP
Pro. After installing it on my laptop and booting from the original instal CD
(that came with it), it loads all the initial files but stops responding when
it gets to the page "Set up is installing W/XP, with the options Enter,
Repair etc.) None of these work. I recently replaced and successfully
reinstalled XP on a new disk on my desktop using exactlty the same method as
described above, so what is stopping Windows loading now?
Any advise greatly appreciated.

Failure to install an operating system is normally because of bad hardware:

1. Bad install media - check on another PC if possible.

2. Bad optical drive; swap out for a known-working one. Harder to do with a
laptop. You can also try installing from an external CD drive if your
laptop will boot from a USB device.

3. Bad hard drive - perhaps the used drive you got isn't in as good shape as
you think it is.

4. Bad RAM - can be tested with a diagnostic utility like Memtest86+.

5. Other failing components on the motherboard, or the motherboard itself.

In short, your original hard drive may not have failed (since we don't know
how you tested) or it was not the only hardware component that failed.

Hi Malke,
Thanks for prompt response. I have just got all the information missing
about this laptop and is as follows:
Laptop Compaq model nx9005 runing W/XP Pro. I gave this computer to my
daughter in perfect working order 2 months ago and while I was away last week
she tells me everything went blank. She saught the help of a friend who is in
computers who fitted a small 10gb disk with W/XP Home Edition to help her out
on some important documents. The laptop is working perfectly well with this
drive so the optical drive, motherboard and ram memory must all be well??
Her friend needs his disk back (apart from the fact that 10gb is useless)
and I simply want to install my 40gb and load XP Pro from the original CD Rom
..
(I still got the 10gb working disk with me for the moment).
My 40gb when connected by USb to my desktop seems perfectly ok. I can
download any files or folders to it, delet them etc. Like I said previously,
I have formatted it and checked it for errors and nothing shows to be "bad"
about it?
Any further comments?

You'd be better off cross-posting between here and m.p.w.help_and_support
than multi-posting. That way all of your answers will be together, and
responders can see what's already been tried by you.
Please read here: http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm

Just a suggestion.

HiSc Tom,
I am sorry, it is not my intention to annoy or upset anyone. I am only
asking for advise and I was not sure where to post it. I have read your link
but I still do not understand what I am supposed to put where now so to avoid
the socalled multi-posting?

Tony:
Since you're fortunate enough to have a working HDD in the laptop,
notwithstanding that it's a 10 GB disk, and you have a 40 GB HDD available
as a replacement...

Why don't you consider cloning the contents of that 10 GB HDD to the 40 GB
HDD and then install the latter in the laptop?

I'm assuming, of course, that your daughter finds the contents of the 10 GB
HDD perfectly acceptable or that she can modify its contents after the 40 GB
disk is installed in the laptop and she has a working OS.

Presumably you would use your USB external enclosure as the recipient device
to house the 40 GB HDD during the disk-cloning operation. And, of course,
you would need a disk-cloning program to undertake the process. Do you
presently work with such a program? If not, you (and your daughter) should
consider using one (not only in connection with the present issue) but to
perform routine comprehensive backups of your systems.

If you're interested in going this route there are a number of disk-cloning
programs you should consider. One of them is very popular among posters to
this and related newsgroups - the Acronis True Image program. A trial
version is available at
http://www.acronis.com

The program we strongly recommend is the Casper 5 program. A trial version
is available at http://www.fssdev.com
However, the trial version is slightly crippled in that the disk-space on
the "destination" drive, i.e., the recipient of the clone, cannot be resized
by the trial version of the program. (No such limitation is present in the
licensed version).

So that in your case, should you use the Casper 5 trial version, the 10 GB
"source" HDD would be cloned to the 40 GB "destination" HDD, however, *only*
a 10 GB partition would be created on the destination drive. The remaining
disk space on that disk would be unallocated. Of course you could use a
third-party utility such as Partition Magic or the freely-available EASEUS
Partition Manager to expand the 10 GB partition to encompass the full
capacity of the 40 GB disk.

Not annoying to me, but you would be provided better responses if everyone
could see what's been done; I'm just trying to help you out a little. All
you have to do is put both this newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware) and the other NG you've posted to
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support) on the same line separated by
a semi-colon. A single post sent to two or more newsgroups is cross-posting.
A post sent to two or more newsgroups one at a time is multi-posting. When
someone replies to a cross-posted post, that response will be seen in all
the groups that it's in. I hope I haven't confused you- I'm starting to
confuse myself :)

Hi again SC Tom,
Forgive me for being stupid or something but in the newsgroup search box one
can only select one discussion group from the drop down list available? Once
this is chosen one cannot manually add anything else in that box or is it
somewhere else where I am supposed to write this in?
I am sorry but just cannot see it.

First, please don't top post. Just as please don't mult-post.
Second, start from here.
http://groups.google.ca/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware/post?hl=en

There is a fill-in box, where you can type in as many newgroups as you
want,
separated by semi-colons.

Hope this helps.

Hi Harry,
Thanks for your comment. It appears to find out more about how I should post
I need to open an account with Google? This is what I get after visiting the
link you sent me. Why is it so unclear as to where to write what on a simple
page? I have sent three comments now and I am still none the wiser.
I will not multi-post again. It was never my intention and I apologise if
this has caused inconvenience to anyone. But why cannot someone tell me in
plain English how or where do you enter two or more group addresses if
needed? The page/s I see do not have a fill-in box to do this.

Hi Anna,
Thank you for your helpful information. I have never used a disk-cloning
program before as I tend to save my data, as and when required, to a large
external drive.
I do however see the merits in the procedures you describe and I am taking a
note of all the relevant details for future use.
Happily, I have to tell you that I managed to sort my problem out in the
manner I had intended. I was pretty sure my laptop was up to scratch, as it
was working fine with the other drive. I was also sure about my original OS
cd and my new 40gb hardrive which I had them tested, so why was not Windows
able to load? Well, it may be coincidence, fluke or I do not know what, but
after removing the cd from the drive and giving it a good wipe over ( it was
not dirty so it really did not need it), I replaced it, launched it one last
time (I said to myself) and this time the set up continued uninterrupted till
the end as it should have done the first time I tried it.
So there you have it. I now have a fully working Windows XP Pro on a 40gb
disk. Whatever the reason for this behaviour perhaps I will never get to
know, but one thing is for sure with computers, they are fickle things and
one never stops learning for however long one may need to use them.
I would like once again to say thanks to you and all the others who joined
in with their advise/view. I do really appreciate your unselfish work.
Best regards
Tony

USENET has other servers you can use besides Google. For example

nntp.aioe.org (You don't have to register to use this one.
There is a limit to the number of text messages you
can post per day - I haven't hit the limit in a long time.
This server has a number of filter rules in place, to
prevent spamming, and even has some groups which are
closed to making new posts. The admin on this server,
is still in the process of getting his website up and
running again, which is why I cannot just point you to
his web site to get help. The server had to be moved to
another colocation provider, which upset everything.)

news.motzarella.org (This one requires registration. You use a username and
password, in the news reader you use, and tick the
"authenticate when I log in" or equivalent box. Since
authentication is used, spammers can simply have their
accounts deleted.)

I use Thunderbird, downloadable for free from mozilla.org (version 2.0.0.19)

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

When you do a File:New:Account in there (or are prompted for the same info
when starting the program for the first time), the info needed is -

*******
New Account Setup
(Tick "Newsgroup account")
Your Name
(Enter your real name or a pseudonym - "Tony" would do)
Email Address
(Enter a valid value, if you really want everybody to be
able to reach you, spammers and all. Otherwise, enter
something unique, which you can later search for in the
groups.google.com archive. "(e-mail address removed)". The invalid
domain is reserved for fake email addresses. If you look at
my fake email address, notice it is not formatted properly,
according to that rule. I didn't know about the .invalid thing
at the time.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.invalid
Server Information
Newsgroup Server = nntp.aioe.org
Account Name
Account Name = nntp.aioe.org (easier to recognize this way)
*******

When you see the new entry in the left hand column, you can click on
it. You can use "View Settings For This Account" to correct any
mistakes. For "Server Settings", you can leave the port number at 119,
or if the server admin offers other options, use the recommended port
number. The "Always Request Authentication..." box, would be ticked by
the user, if using a USENET server requiring username and password,
such as Motzarella. For AIOE, no authentication is needed, so no
need to tick that box.

Now, the fun part. Instead of "View Settings For This Account",
click the "Manage Newsgroup Subscriptions". This will be the first
time Thunderbird will access the Internet and connect to your
free news server. There will be a short delay, while Thunderbird
downloads the names of 30,000+ newsgroups. That is so you can be
offered a menu of newsgroups to access.

If you type into the "Show items that contain:" box, you could
type in there.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

If that name matches an entry in the list, there will be a tick box
next to the name, so you can add that newsgroup to your list of
groups to post to. You can subscribe to multiple groups. If
you want, you can add "alt.test" as a group, and your first
test posting can go there. Click OK to exit the "Manage Newsgroup
Subscriptions".

Looking back at the left column again, there is a (+) next to
nntp.aioe.org on the left. If you click the (+), it will expose
the list of subscribed newsgroups. Each time the list is "exposed",
Thunderbird will connect to the server and scan for new articles.
The number in brackets after the group name, shows how many
new articles are there. Now, click on the group name.

If there are a lot of article headers in the group, a dialog will
ask if you want to download only 500 of them. To reduce the load
on the server, accept the limit of 500 to download.

After that step, you should be looking at a list of articles on
the right. If you do "File:New:Message", while in that newsgroup,
a new message box will appear, and the newsgroup name should be
in the header area at the top. Enter a descriptive Subject
(not "Help!", as that is too dopey). You can enter some nice,
formatted text in paragraphs, making it easy for people to read.
By default, I would expect Thunderbird to limit the line length
to 72 characters.

Later, if you're reading an article, like this post, and
you click on my post and then click the "Reply" button,
that will cause your new posting to reference the
article number of my post. That is called "threading", and
makes your "Reply" fall underneath the thread. In a Reply,
you don't need to change the Subject field, as it makes
it easier to understand, if all the articles in a thread
have the same Subject for consistency. Your reply text
goes at the bottom of the page, below the quoted text.
If the quoted text is excessively long, you can snip parts
of it, but leave enough quoted text so later readers know
what you're referring to.

Welcome to USENET :)

You can use groups.google.com later, once your article
propagates (could take an hour). If you search on
"(e-mail address removed)" or whatever you used for an email
address, it will make it easier to find copies of your
postings later on. Say, for example, you had a problem
a year ago, and want to copy the text from that posting,
into a new article. Google has longer "retention", than
any regular news server, which is why we still use
Google in a "read-only" way.

HTH,
Paul

Hi, Tony - You don't want to use Google Groups to post to Usenet. Many
people won't even reply to posters from Google Groups. The information
below will tell you what you need to know.

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn
to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you
can use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have
it. Here are some links to information about newsgroups:
