Microphone

I can't get my microphone to work. I bought a new
headset with a microphone. I tried to get the sound
recorder to record a sound with it, to test it, with no
luck. I have checked all the drivers, tested the
hardware, voice recognition and everything I can think
of, but the microphone will not work. I have tried
setting it up in a voicechat on messenger, but during the
adjustment test, it says the computer did not receive
anything from the mic. I know it is plugged into the
right jack. Could my jack be bad? or maybe my sound
card? is there any way to try and get the computer to
check the mic. hardware besides trying to record in the
accessories recorder? I don't want to get a new sound
card, but I will if I have to.

Hi Mike,

Go to My Network Places/Properties.....connection in question and uncheck
QoS Packet Scheduler.

Try the mic on another computer, plz.
Or borrow a mic to be setup on your computer for test.

The mike is most likely muted in the record mixer. This is a separate
mixer from the playback mixer that you more commonly see. Double click
on the speaker in the system tray, this brings up the playback mixer.
Then Options / Properties / Recording to get to the recording mixer.
Make sure that the mike is enabled, not muted and that the volume is
turned up.

Another possibility, there are two kinds of microphones in general use,
capacitance and dynamic. Some sound cards take only one type or the
other, some take both but you have to reset a jumper setting. This
could be the problem as well, but I think that the mixer is the more
likely issue.

After that, the problems get much more obscure.

Now what exactly does that have to do with the fact that his microphone
doesn't work with "Sound Recorder", which is a purely local app?

This is an audio problem, not a network problem.

Maybe nothing, maybe everything. I can re-create this instance on three of
my systems here. And was the first to notify Gateway/Dell/Intel/MS and
Messenger users of the issue and workaround.

BTW, Barry .... there was no need to have this sent to my inbox.
