voice cannot be detected HELP!

I cannot record voice on my computer (Win XP HE).
I tried 2 microphones that I used fine before with this computer.
The microphone is connected to the mic jack in the computer. Mic is ON.

Not mute! Device manager does not show any problems with any device.

Sound and Audio Device Properties: Default Device for Voice Recording is
Avance A97, no other option available; Advanced button under it is GRAY - is
that normal?
Test hardware cannot locate any problems but sound hardware test wizard
CANNOT DETECT MY VOICE during the test.

Volume button: Recording control: microphone is selected (checkmark);
Advanced: checkmark next to 1 - Mic Boost; Bass, Treble slider cannot be
moved from Low to High.

Volume control: Properties: Recording: Mic is checked here!

Please help!!! I have an assignment due in 2 days for which I have to record
sound and insert it into a video file!

remove sound card from device manager and reinstall drivers....sure correct
drivers are being used ?

I am not sure what to remove. Is it a driver for Avance AC97 Audio? In Device
Manager, under Sound controllers, there are also Legacy Audio Drivers and
Audio Codecs listed.
I checked my pc manufacturer's site, the driver for Avance listed is the
same number that I find in driver properties on my pc.
To remove driver - does that mean to uninstall it? After driver removal,
will Avance still be listed under device manager? And will there be a button
to install a driver (I am afraid it will disappear, how do I add it then)?

I've just had a live chat with my pc manufacturer's agent. He suggested for
me to try a mic jack in the back of my computer (I have a jack in the front,
also). I did and it WORKED!!! He said could be bad connectors in the front of
my PC.
I am still grateful to you, Haggis, for your reply.
Posting this for everybody - maybe such trick will fix a problem for
somebody else.

I cannot get my Microphone to work on the computer. I have tried two and both work very well on another device. My sound card is part of the motherboard setup and I have no separate card.

"Advanced Controls" grayed out in Recording Control.

I do not have Speech recognition in my XP Home and am puzzled on how to
install it. Instructions tell me to either use Office XP or Word 2002 and I
have neither.
