Microphone won't work

I plugged the mic into the back of my computer, but it
won't let me record sound. The microphone is always
turned on, and I even turned it's volume to the maximum
in the control panel. How can I get it to work... I need
the mic for speech recognition.

First test the mic in another device (tape recorder, stereo, etc.) and
confirm it works.

Next step is to use the Sound Recorder tool to test it out. If it
doesn't work, then my hunch is problem with sound board drivers. Check
the My Computer/Properties Devices.
