Microphone problem

My microphone seems to work but I must crank my speakers to hear play back or anything. The volumes are all the way up on all fronts. Yet all the sounds already in programs and apps seem to work fine. Do I need a pre-amp for my mic to make the volumes even? ex. system sounds good at three but an't hear what I say into mic unless I raise speaker volume then everything else is too loud. Hekp please anyone?

Be sure that the mic is plugged into the MIC jack, not LINE IN - though in
THAT jack it might not work at all. There should be no need for a preamp.
Try another mic.

Sounds like you don't have the gain slider for the mic "record" turned up
high enough.

Dub click on your little speaker in the task bar and select
options>properties>record and make sure the slider for the mic is up high
enough. Also their is usually a mic boost option to give you more gain.
