Sound recorder/ microphone too quiet

Hello people, I am having trouble with my microphone. When i try to record
through it using Sound Recorder the wave graphic depicting sound input
dosn't move at all and I can hear myself very very faintly on the playback.
If I go into volume control the mic is selected and the levels are all set
at full. How can I increase the volume of the mic any further. The sound
card is a C-Media one.

Did you check your settings in the "Recording control" also, and not
the Volume control. Two different things.

The mic is definately plugged in correctly because you can hear the
playback, it's just incredibly quiet. At first I thought i could just up the
volume but you'd have to up the playback volume so much everything else
would be too loud. It's not a mic problem because i borrowed a friends mic
and had the same problem. Also this is my 2nd sound card with exactly the
same trouble. It's definately recording because you can hear the playback
but the sound going in isn't even enough to move the green line display in
sound recorder.

Any help is greatly appreciated David.
