Microphone not working in XP

Hey...

I posted another post in here ealier this week, alas, it seems ot have
'disappeared' so, I'll try this again.

I am running WIN XP SP3 and I am having problems getting my mic to be
recognized, I have went through all the help and advice in all the posts in
here...

An my Advanced areas, the mic WAS Slelected--NOT muted, but, I was able to
Select another itme, hence the mic is 'clean' now, also I noticed on the
Record area that isa is greyed out, should it be greyed out and if not, how
do I get it to where I can use it?

I was told by my brother that it SHOULD NOT be greyed out and IF it is, then
I need to try another audio divice and see if it works with it, like my Ipod
or someother audio device. My desktop speakers work just fine and th3e
hjeadphone part of my headphone/mic comvo unit work fine, just not the mic
part.

HELP!!!!! I am getting ready to start working from home an dI NEED this to
WORK!!!!!

Thanks,
Persephone

Be sure that the mic actually does work. Try it on another system, try
another mic that you know to work. It's also possible that the mic jack is
broken, in which case you probably need to add another sound card or audio
interface.

Thanks Patrick, I have gotten it to work now..YES!!!!!! But, here is another
question, my voice didn't sound very loud on it, I have maxed out all the
volume controls that I have, what else can I do, if anything?

Thanks again!!!

If the mic does not have a lot of output, you have to either use a mic that
does, or amplify it with an external amplifier.

Microphones are not by any means all equal.

For just non-critical voice amplification, I tend to use small mixers, in a
number of cases Behringer products, which are available at many music
stores. They aren't great, and noise levels rise dramatically if you have
to turn them up, but if you're careful that isn't a problem; and they are
not expensive as these things go.

What kind and quality of mic you need is heavily influenced by what you need
it for.
