Microphone installation

I am trying to get my microphone to work. It's completely
dead. I use Windows XP Professional, Sound Blaster Live!
and the microphone is the cheapest I could get (no name).
Anybody have any ideas what I need to do??

Have you checked the volume control to see that the mic input is not muted
and the slider is moved up? Are you sure you have the mic plug pushed all
the way into the proper jack?
