Hiya,
I brought a laptop today (Acer3680 series) with vista home basic on it.
Vista will not allow windows live messenger. Does anybody know of any
messenger that Vista will support?.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with this, I dont understand why
because I have windows vista premium and I dont have any problems with
windows live messenger, it works fine and downloaded fine as well. Maybe it
is because I have premium, but I cant see why this would be the issue. Alas i
have no answer for you, possibly try to download it again with your security
and spamware setting off or low.

Acers do have problems with Windows Live Messenger (it may be something to
do with the webcam). Acting on advice on other forums, I went into WLM
properties (right-clicking on the icon), then clicked 'Compability', then,
under the 'Compability mode' section, selected the 'Windows XP (Service Pack
w) mode for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for'. It works most of
the time normally now, though not always; if it doesn't, just right-click on
it and select 'Run as administrator'. It should work OK then.

If all else fails, uninstall it and download an earlier version.

Hiya Ian,
I have given it a try but still no luck. All I keep getting is the message
saying the DEP has closed it.

Thankyou for trying though.

Friends are advising formatting the hard drive and going back to XP

Did you try running it as an Administrator? That seems to have worked for
everyone I've seen post about this problem.

I'm having the same problem. Messenger 7.5 works fine, but not with webcam.
I've jsut installed the live messenger from scratch, with advise from
microsoft customer support. Still not working. I have changed compatibility
thing as mentioned and tried running it as administrator, but it does not
come up. It's downloaded fine, but does not open up!

Reload you cam software, it may not be compatible and you may need to go to
its web site for a vista driver.

longer works (sometimes) and that you need to re-install don't worry about
that just leave it alone. the fix does work, by the way, but sometimes like
i said data.... will claims that you need to re-install the software again,
just click ok and keep working the program still works.

My goodness, all these problems with Vista. I don't understand because I
have had a very pleasant experience with Vista. I have had the OS for two
months now and not one single issua at all. I keep hearing all these stories
here and there. I think it all comes down to operator error. You need to
study up on how to use even the basic settings for your OS.

As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I have had no problems with
Vista at all. I am not tooting my horn so to speak, I am simply saying that
Vista is awesome. I think it all comes down to operator error. People need
to get familiar with the basics of computing and not reading instructions
half way through. Do your homework people, get smart. Read, read, read, and
read some more. Everything you need to know are in the help files and Vista
has a great one, the best ever, way better than XP or any other OS before
Vista. F1 is your friend! Use it why don't you?

Before taking such a condescending attitude toward the large number of
very experienced people here who HAVE had problems you need to learn
something, yourself - not all users are happy just because minesweeper
works flawlessly. What "You" use is not necessarily what others need to
use, and you may simply have been "Lucky" with the various components of
your system.

Of the machines I have installed 20% have worked perfectly, 80% have had
problems, and you are correct, when it goes perfectly it is a good
system, however it does have some issues that MS need to address even then.

As for the other 80%, all with allegedly "Compatible" hardware the
problems have been quite difficult, certainly beyond the average user on
a limited budget. This is NOT user error or incompetence, and it is
plain wrong to assume that your experience is guaranteed to all.
