Vista Basic???

What is VIsta Basic (as opposed to Vista Home, Pro, or Ultimate)?

A local retailer has the ACER 5516 laptop for less than $300, but it
says it has Windows Vista Basic - that makes me wonder what features
you don't get. What features will Vista Basic not have that Vista
Home would?

You've got the terminology wrong. There is no Vista Basic and there is
no Vista Home.

What there is is Home Basic (the lowest level) and Home Premium (one
level higher). You can read about the differences here

Just FYI.

Vista Home = Vista Basic they are one and the same.

The product is "Vista Home Basic" - they are not two separate products.

I believe there's four editions of Vista: Vista Home Basic, Vista Home
Premium, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate

Vista Home Basic doesn't come with Aero, Media Centre, and lacks some
security or networking features.
