"Message Interface has returned an unknown error"

I am not able to delete email by simply hitting the "delete" button. I now
need to press "shift", then "Delete" then confirm the delete. Everything was
working fine until midway through reading email yesterday when this error
suddenly started appearing. I restarted Outlook a couple of times, I rebooted
my machine a few times, I've reset Windows to a checkpoint last week when I
know everything was running smoothly and yet the problem persists.

I'm running Outlook 2000, have Norton Antivirus software, and use Inboxer as
my spam filter.

Any information as to how to correct this error message is greatly
appreciated!
 
How big is the PST file?
If it is around 1.8 GB you'll need to reduce the size of it. I'd try a new
profile then see if you can open that old PST and copy some items to that
new profile.
You can also try to run scnapst.exe on the existing PST file.
