my laptop and desktop both have 256 Mram, system summary
on laptop shows 261,616KB and desktop shows 253,424KB is
this indicative of some kind of virus. or a manufacturing
variance.

That probably means that 8 MB are dedicated to your video "card" as opposed
to have a video card with its own dedicated memory. This is common in
laptops and low-level desktop computers as well.

It looks like the video adapter on the desktop machine is using 8MB of RAM.
That's normal-- its because the video adapter is built onto the motherboard
as opposed to being a different card with its own memory.

I try to avoid systems like that, but I guess it saved you some money.
