Memory Stick Trouble

Hi,
Me and my Father have both bought new Emachines computers about last
September and havent had any major problems until a few months ago and it
happend to both computers. We thought it would go away. The problem was that
random times that we plug our two different brand, and size of sticks in any
USB port the computer would not reconize it, and would have to restart the
computer. But, whenever we couldn't get the sticks to work the computer would
not shut down in any form until you hold the power button down. My question's
are: is this common, is this fixable, and if so how? At first we thought it
might be a virus but my computer is not connected to the internet. Then we
might have thought it was our sticks but it doesn't do it in Vista. Can
anyone help???

Thanks
Koda
