My computer is running out of memory on my hard drive, I want to delete
unnecesary programs of microsoft but do not know which ones to delete or if I
can't delete any of them at all. Which programs should I delete to make more
room on my hard drive but still have micrososft working right on my computer?
Strictly speaking, what's on your hard drive isn't "memory"; that's a different
part of the computer.
If you have most or all of Microsoft Office (any version) installed, you can
uninstall any of the Office programs you don't use, and get back the disk space
they take up (although that may be less than you think).
Before you do the rest of what I'll discuss, first try cleaning up the sort of
garbage that tends to accumulate on a disk while you're using programs --
temporary files, unneeded backup files, installation log files, and so on. First
go through the procedures at
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm. Then click Start menu >
Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and let it scrub your disk. Warning:
don't let it remove the Office installation files (see below).
Go to Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click the
Microsoft Office item and click the Change button. Depending on which version
you have, it may show different choices, but one of them is always to add/remove
features. Select that and click the Next button. In the list of programs, click
any that you can do without, and set them to "Not Available". When the
selections are right, click the Update button and wait while the programs are
removed.
If you decide later that you really do need one or more of those programs, you
should be able to go back to the same Change dialog and set those programs to
"Run from my computer". You may or may not need the original CD to do that -- if
you let Disk Cleanup remove the Office installation files, then you definitely
will need the CD.
