Media Player 10 or 9 refuse to play many things after last winupda

In Nevember my WinXPSP2 received many new updates.
After this, my Windows Media Player refused to play many type of audio and
video files, that were previously played.
I re-installed it, but it is the same.
So, I downgraded it to MP 9.0, but it was the same.
So, I put again MP 10, and it was the same.
basically, the error message tells me that the format is not supported or
that the plug-in to play it is not foundable.
If I click on Support, I reach a webpage at Microsoft that says that
Microsoft is working on that issue, and that I have to wait later new updates
for correction.
That is unbelievable !
What to do ?
I want to recover plain functionality of my player, please help me !
Or, else what other free good universal audio and video player I could
install and use instead of MP 10 ?
Thanks.

Have you considered a codec issue? Downloaded codec packages? What about
downloading another type of free player to see if the problem is media
player or something to do with your video card or settings? Try downloading
realplayer or the divx player (which has some junk but also a terrific codec
package). Another alternative might be your hardware accelerator.

bestofcomputer,
There is always an easy way and the hard way of doing anything. In the easy
way you do nothing whereas in the hard way you do a lot of research(which
takes a lot of time). However if you do it the hard way and the problem
re-occurs you know exactly what to do(thanks to your earlier research). So
here are both of them:

Easy=>Download the real player.
Hard=>Uninstall the update listed under windows media player in the
add/remove programs and then check if the problem persists. Here begins the
actual troubleshooting. A thing to note here though, its not necessary that
troubleshooting this will take a lot of time. Just removing that update may
also help.

Now the choice is yours.

Hope this helps

Hello , I believe "Downgrading MP10 to MP9 is not possible . Even if MP10 is
removed and you insert the CD {that has the MP9 as part of the bundle pakage}
and install MP9 you will be prompted to update without a choice to continue
installation... . Sometimes when installing the MP9 from the CD you may not
get a full updated / upgraded install successfuly as missing functions may
exist like : Burning capabilities and Skin Mode selections will be minamal to
4 or 5 choices when really there are about ...15 skin modes to choose from ?
If perhaps you end up with missing functions .. remove MP10 again and simply
download the MP10 at Microsoft.com and you will have your Media Player back
in action . If you want the MP9 and the MP9 minus the MP10 upgrade , you will
have to restore the PC and start all over ... to get the MP9 installed
successfuly . And must refuse any and all future updates thereafter . One
update to the MP9 and you will get the MP10 .

Hello all of you, thanks for your post.
Then my comments :
- codec issue : I dont think so. But now that you talk about it, I remember
that my MP10 has asked me to accept a new update, and I did, but I dont know
if it was microsoft codecs or else. And how to correct a possible pb with
corrupted codecs ?
But anyway, I repeat again :
- Yes I have succesfully downgraded to MP9, simply by removing the MP10
upgrade, and then installing again the MP9 setup (downloaded from microsoft),
but the pb persisted.
- Yes I have successfully re-installed MP10 (downloaded from microsoft), but
the pb persisted.
- By the same time I was uninstalling the MP10 upgrade, I have also removed
all updates or hotfix related to the MP, and the pb persisted.
So, folks, what else can I do ?
Oh, yes, I forgot : I didnt try with real player : I will do that, and then
I will let you know...
But anyway, I repeat :
On the error message box of my MP when trying to play audio or video that no
more plays, there is a link to get more support, and if I click this link, i
reach a web page that tells me that Microsoft is actually working on that
issue and that I have to wait later hotfixes : this is amazing, since it
seems the pb comes from microsoft itself. So what to do if they dont correct
this pb ? What other hotfixes I should remove to correct this pb ?
Thanks.
