Media player

I accidentally set Media player to record a TV series off of my TV
tuner card. When I discovered this, MP had recorded quite a few
shows.

Can MP record scheduled TV shows when MP is not open and listed on the
task bar? Since I was unaware that the shows were supposed to be
scheduled I did not notice that where was a MP icon in the system
tray.

Are you referring to Media Center ?

It records TV shows. And uses a program guide to figure
out when to do the recording. Media Center has limits
as to what tuner card types it will record from.

Windows Media Player, on the other hand, can stream content
to DLNA-equipped TV sets. As well as play back movies and
music. I wasn't aware it did TV recording, because that
would duplicate what Media Center does.

And any program can be "non-resident" and still do things,
by setting a wakeup task for later. The task scheduler keeps
a list of launch times for things, and launches them. It's up
to the program to then figure out what it is supposed to be
doing (like, record from Channel 3 for the next thirty minutes).

When the computer is asleep, there is one timer register in
the Southbridge, and it can be loaded with "the next time
I want to be awakened". And that's how software that isn't
running, can do things.
