Windows Media Player 10 unable to play any files

When I try to play a video file (for example AVI in Techsmith Codec) I get
the message:
"Windows Media player cannot play the file. The player might not support the
codec that was used to compress the file". The same thing happens for any
video file format, even regular windows AVI files!. I'm also unable to play
wny audio file, even mp3 or wma. I went to Control Panel, Sound and Audio
Devices and in the Hardware Tab whck the Video Codec and Audio Codec listings
and they are all properly installed!. When I play these files with other
players (Winamp, Camtasia Player, Quicktime, Realplayer, etc) they play fine.
How can I fix Windows Media PLayer?
My OS is WinXP SP2 with latest patches and Windows Media Player 10.
This issue was detected after installing K-Lite Codec Pack. I uninstalled it
but it remains the same.
Thanks for your feedback.
