Hi Frank

I really hope so..... beacuse attachment handling and users knowledge
about risks are critical for Windows Mail and also Live Mail.

Really stupid to learn "Mrs Smith" how to unblock for example jpg
files viewing within OE settings when she doesn´t understand how to
protect a PC........

Perhaps to include a Security Center block for views if no antivirus
shield is installed, running and updated.

One Care will maybe fit this user group.......

F-Secure has ads about "GrandMa" tested and this is important
without any jokes thats this is working.

Vista includes Defender. Windows Mail has an entirely new message store,
eliminating the old DBX structure. As far as I know, none of us have been
able to break it yet. I know Steve Cochran has really stressed it and at
last communication it hadn't lost a message.

Hi

Yes I have been playing with 5308..... ;)

This will for sure be a "long run" and I am not so impressed with
Vistan
, too many eye candy functions and a "strange" UAP functionality, IMHO
and it will takes years to move over users to Vista.... I´m sure ;)

Maybe if MS and the industry spoke out about TPM it was totally safe.

The Step from Win 3.1 > Win 95 was great
Win 98/Me to w2k and XP was also great.

XP to Vista....... ????

And beacuse of this a SP3 for XP is really important...........
Windows Mail also for XP !

Well, maybe like to throw stones at a "glass house" as with OE......

"Where is the setting to directly view attachments" ;)))

Simple--just hit "reply"?

Nope......

Check OE settings ;) Within the security tab you have a magic
checkbox ;) A lot of users ask about it and gets the answer to uncheck
it to view attachments. Done ! a ticking bomb again for several users.

It´s a nice function within Thuderbird with an view button when you
recognise a mail from someone you know and thusth.

(well--that is on Windows 2000 (reply.))

I know about the checkbox.

The "view" button sounds good, but what does it actually do? Is the
"viewer" app safe to use? Viruses are just as likely--perhaps more
likely--to come from someone you know.......

Hi

Well, it´s up to the user to deside but it´s much better
then tohave automagic openings for all attachments or script/HTML
mails.

Much more boring perhaps but nescessary with todays situation.

But this is a trouble/problem for example for older people how to open
a jpg file from someone.

And a challenge for a software vendor.

I don't think you'll ever see Windows Mail for XP. I think there's a good
chance for a service pack for OE on XP SP2, bu it won't include the new
message store.

It is a challenge. My parents live in a place which is connected to a
nursing home for senior citizens. They have a common computer room with 3
or 4 machines, of which one has a dialup Internet connection. That machine
is regularly at risk for viruses because of 1) the surfing habits of some of
the male residents, and 2) the exchanges of "cute" or "joke" links and
cartoons and pictures between those same residents and some of their
friends. Social engineering has no age boundary.

Hi

Thats the challenge when a grandson/daughter sends a beutiful jpg file
from his/hers for example birthday celebration.

Next day the bad guys also sends a jpg file ............

Elderly users must have a totally automagic protection shield but
the problem is all "transients " with every protection.

And also elderly users with dial up, nearly impossible to handle a
protection.

Well, more to come in future, OE is nevertheless a "risk".......

I am not sure that I understand. I also use McAfee VirusScan and I had no
significant problems with Defender - at least as far as I know. But I am
interested in trying to fiugure out what is happending on your PC. I am just
another user trying to figure this thing out. I have noticed that sometimes
when I do an update for McAFee, Defender asks if I want the McAFee cleanup
program to run after the update. I always allow that and have no problems.
Is Defender asking you to make a choice about something with McAFee, or is it
turning McAfee off by itself without asking you? How do you know that McAFee
is off? Does the security center alert you that virussscan is off, or is the
security center turned off also?
I am always having to allow my Mcafee to windows defender. It is bothersome.
It has quit turning off my virus scan after I told it not to take action
without notifing me. I want to thank eveyone for all the input it has helped
a great deal.
Thanks

I know that the virus scan is turned off because my icon turns black and it
says that it is turned off.

I've now seen at least two other reports similar to yours--McAfee being
disabled by scheduled scans. Your workaround is the one I would recommend
until this gets fixed--which will probably take action by both Microsoft and
McAfee

I need some more information here

1) McAfee Version
2) windefend events in the event log which may be related to McAfee.

-Thanks so much for this input, I am not going crazy after all. I use mcafee secuity suite 10.0.27 version. I cetainly hope that they get tis bug worked out. I am still having trouble with the error code when WD runs a scheduled scan. I have un-installed and re-installed and still have the same problem. The scan also doesnt begin at the right time. It could start anywhere from 10 minutes till or a half an hour later. Any input?

My Mcafee version is 10.0.27
It is not allowing Mcafee virus scan-not yet classified. I t has allowed
Mcafee spamkiller and personal firewall though.

The question of the scan not beginning at the expected time is another one
that I don't have a handle on. It doesn't happen on the systems I've looked
at, and I'm not sure what would be happening--the scheduled tasks facility
should be quite reliable and effective.

What error do you get on the scan? This may well be a bug that we don't
have a workaround for--if you have a dynamic partition. For some users, a
chkdsk helps, though.
