mcaffee virus scan

Windows Defender seems to be clashing with my anti-virus program. Does anyone
else seem to have this problem?
All input would be helpful
Thanks

Could you describe exactly what conflicts you are seeing between McAfee and
Defender?

It keeps turning off my virus protection. Then I get an alert from Window
Defender that there has been a change to Mcafee. I turn it back on and it's
alright for a little while and then it turns it off again. I think Microsoft
giant anti-spyware was a lot better.

I am not sure that I understand. I also use McAfee VirusScan and I had no
significant problems with Defender - at least as far as I know. But I am
interested in trying to fiugure out what is happending on your PC. I am just
another user trying to figure this thing out. I have noticed that sometimes
when I do an update for McAFee, Defender asks if I want the McAFee cleanup
program to run after the update. I always allow that and have no problems.
Is Defender asking you to make a choice about something with McAFee, or is it
turning McAfee off by itself without asking you? How do you know that McAFee
is off? Does the security center alert you that virussscan is off, or is the
security center turned off also?

Do you, perchance, have IE7 beta 2 preview installed? It conflicts with
McAfee as the release notes state.

I agreed with Frank, I have McAfee VirusScan 10 and Defender and there are no
issues between McAfee and Defender. The Issue is only between IE7 Beta 2
Preview and McAfee.

Of course, I don't think much of McAfee after ten years of seeing it cause
problems with Outlook Express. Now the latest:

All of that about McAfee reminds me of what Microsoft Antispyware did to
Symntec AntiVirus. Some deleted files and crippled programs there too.
That's why I do not have any of my security tools set to take actions
automatically. They can "automatically" crash your system. I had that McAFee
false positive show up in about 50 files, but I researched before I acted and
received an immediate update that resolved the problem. Defender should not
be enabled to automatically take actions after a scheduled scan either.

I use VirusScan 10. I'm not quite sure what "reesesroxie" is referring to,
but perhaps it is the fact that WD has not yet classified McAfee's
"mcappins.exe". When I update, I am constantly asked if I want to allow it.
(file:C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Shared\mcappins.exe) A simple click of the
mouse is not a problem for me. Although.. slightly bothersome. I could turn
off the alert, but it would defeat my purposes. Otherwise.. no conflicts or
problems with McAfee.

In regard to the "clean up". I was under the impression because I use MS's
Hive CleanUp Service, I'm being asked about that too. Kind of difficult for
me to understand how a MS product hasn't classified another MS product.
But.. that's just me. AND.. I may be wrong about whether or not this IS the
Hive Cleanup. I suspect that it is though.

Any additional input?

I wouldn't be too quick to throw stones. Microsoft Antispyware had a
similar "issue" with Symantec Corporate antivirus about a month and a half
ago.

This stuff will happen--what's important is how well the vendors handle it.

I agree about the automatically take action setting. I reverse that default
on high-value machines--servers and other unique systems where a false
positive might have significant business impact.

I can say that the code for at least some versions of hive cleanup is called
out as not known.

There's a relatively new version at the download center--don't know if this
changes the detection or not, but it may be worth trying.

After ten years supporting OE I'll throw stones at McAfee any time i get a
reasonable chance.

Hi

Well, maybe like to throw stones at a "glass house" as with OE......

"Where is the setting to directly view attachments" ;)))

;)

Maybe. Windows Mail is better though. But a long way from perfect.

Hi Frank

I really hope so..... beacuse attachment handling and users knowledge
about risks are critical for Windows Mail and also Live Mail.

Really stupid to learn "Mrs Smith" how to unblock for example jpg files
viewing within OE settings when she doesn´t understand how to protect a
PC........

Perhaps to include a Security Center block for views if no antivirus
shield is installed, running and updated.

One Care will maybe fit this user group.......

F-Secure has ads about "GrandMa" tested and this is important
without any jokes thats this is working.
