Mapping a Drive Opens a New Window - How To Prevent in XP?

When you use Windows Explorer to map a drive to a remote server, Windows
Explorer opens an additional window that displays the contents of the drive
you mapped.

In Windows 2000, there was a well-documented way to prevent the new window
from opening (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290703). This KB article
presents the Registry Key solution ("_noWindowMappedDrive").

But in Windows XP, the solution presented in the KB article does not work.

What can I do in XP/SP2 to prevent a new window from opening?

Hi Jordan,

No, KB290703 does not apply to XP system. XP hasn't a MountPoints registry
entry that responds to the entry in the article.
As I have tested, if you hold the shift key and the click Finish button to
map the drive, the system will not pop-up a new windows. Please refer to
