managing the installed fonts

Hi all,

I am a new user to Powerpoint 97, and am having a challenge with too
many fonts according to wisdom I've received, and the suggestions were
to uninstall some fonts (I was getting out of memory errors when trying
to do Org Charts), but I'm not familiar with how to do that.

Is there some way to manage the fonts so they can easily be installed
and uninstalled for use? or do I just move them out of the "Fonts"
folder to a holding folder somewhere? I assume doing so would require a
reboot however, and that would be inconvenient to say the least.

thanks,
niteowl

You need to get yourself a Font Manager Program. something like Bitstream's Font
Manager, or Adobe's Type Manager. this will allow you to keep your fonts at a
reasonable level Here is a link to Bitstreams Font Manager as a start
http://www.bitstream.com/categories/products/fontmanagers/fontres/. Before you
go uninstalling fonts, you should make sure you don't uninstall required fonts
that windows installs this will help there

Michael,

Thanks!

The fonts did indeed seem to be the trouble, though I have more on
another machine that works just fine ?? but it's Powerpoint 2002
instead of 97.. such is life I guess.

The list of fonts installed with win98 you provided me the link for
helped, I uninstalled all that weren't on that list (over 800), and then
put back a few that I really use a lot, and after a couple of bootups
it's working just fine now, and the Org Chart is functioning fine now.

Not sure what happened but for a while the Arial font only displayed the
italic version... ?? it did finally fix itself.

I found 2 programs, "Fontlister" from http://www.theill.com/fl/ and
"Printer's Apprentice" from http://www.loseyourmind.com/, both are
shareware, but both are less expensive than Bitstream ($80), and both
seem to function just fine so far. Also Bitstream had no trialware, so
I passed, hate spending money without being able to try it out first.

The fontlister was only $5 and the Printer's App was $25, both within my
budget limits and sense of program value for what they do.

The interfaces seem similar enough, but we'll see how it goes over the
next week or so after having time to put them to real use.

Thanks for your suggestions and help.

regards,
niteowl

I'm glad that you got things sorted out. the reason I use The Bitstream product,
it came with my Corel Package. ISTR, they used to have a trial package a few
years back.

Michael's suggestions will be most efficient, but if there's no budget for
add'l software, here's another way to work:

Put copies of all your font files in a separate folder (with separate
subfolders to keep things organized) on your hard drive, something other than
the \Windows\Fonts folder.

When you want to install a font, install it from this set of copied font files,
and put a check mark next to the option to copy the fonts to the fonts folder
(important!)

When you want to uninstall a font, use Control Panel, Fonts and delete the font
you don't want installed any longer. No need to reboot when adding/deleting
fonts.
