Making sure the sound setup is right...

My fundamnetal problem is that I cannot make my sound
card record in a sequencer. It could be the sequencer, it
could be the sound card and it could be Windows, to name
just three.

Until recently all my attention has been on the sound
card (Terratec DMX 6fire). Are my drivers set up right?
Is the card fully functional? etc.

Then my attention turned to the sequencer. Was it set up
right? Did it have compatibility problems with my kit?
etc. etc.

To be honest I am still am not 100% sure of either of
these. This is because all the parts of the chain rely on
each other and in several different ways so you cannot
establish which is at fault. At least that is my
experience.

Anyway, now my attnetion has turned to Windows. When I
run the "Test Hardware" option in the "Voice Recording"
section of the "Voice" page in "Sound and Audio Devices".
I get two error messages.

The first one says "An error occured during DirectPlay
Voice Set up. The error code is 0x80004005". When I clear
that I get "Windows cannot execute dpvsetup.exe, use add
remove programs control panl to install"

I looked up the second of these errors in thr knowledge
base and it tells you to move the hardware accelleration
at least one notch to the right. But, it's already over
to the right as far as it goes.

Do I have a more complicated problem? Clutching at straws
here.

sequencers will now record, albeit with a large latency.
This is a massive step forward becuase it confirms to me
that the soundcard is not at fault. The other sequencer I
have does not record. The errors I mentioned when running
the test above still remain. Any other things I can do?

Latency is a trick subject.

Here is the bulk of a message concerning it :

I don't think Richard was "warning you off" M-Audio's products - he simply
stated that Audiophile doesn't have a GM engine.

At any rate, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO with the card? Soundfonts can be played
in just about every halfway decent sampler (Jeskola, VSampler, etc.)
regardless of what card you use, and some 90% of computer musicians today
use VST instruments and effects anyway - which are handled by Audiophile and
the other cards (Echo, etc.) superbly. Audigy wouldn't be such a bad choice
if it weren't for the fact that it's locked in at 48khz, and since many
synths and hosts are set for 44, they end up sounding like Albert & the
Chipmunks on acid. Not to mention that Creative has never bothered with good
ASIO, even though they promised it for SoundBlaster Live for over 5 (!)
years ago...

But don't take my word for it: go and visit some musicians' bulletin boards
(http://www.kvr-vst.com/index.php , http://www.virtualsoundstudio.com/ ,
http://www.vstcentral.com/ , http://www.databaseaudio.co.uk/index.php ,
etc.) read the FAQs and the messages in the forums, and post your own
questions. The most frequently recommended cards seem to be the same no
matter where you turn to. I merely 'peddle' Audiophile because I went
through personal hell before I found it, and this is the only one that has
worked great for me. There are many more and many better cards - although I
don't know of any that would be cheaper in this class.

If you have ASIO multimedia drivers (for example which come with certain
Steinberg products), you can play around with the buffer size ..... but it
may not help. Some cards are not compliant with certain sequensors - try the
soundcard makers web site FAQ's.
