Mainstream support for Win2k to end in June? What is "mainstream"?

I read on news.com about there is not going to be a SP5 for Windows 2000 and
they said at the end that, "Mainstream support for the OS is slated to end
next June, with extended support available until 2010."

What they do mean my "Mainstream"?

And what does "extended support" mean?

Thanks in advance.
