Mainstream support ending - implications?

When the mainstream support for a microsoft product is 'retired' what are the
implications if you are still using the software?
Will my sharepoint sites cease to work?
Will I still be able to use Frontpage 2003 to enhance sharepoint sites as
support for Frontpage 2003 is also 'retired' in Jan 09?
Is product support 'retirement' normally considered a signal to
upgrade/replace the software - and what happens if you dont?

For information on mainstream support and extended support:

Your version of FrontPage will work forever. You can use it as long as you
want. Many people still use programs that are in extended support or are out
of support.

You don't ever have to upgrade if you don't want, until you finally get an
operating system that won't support your version of FP.
