"Microsoft releases spyware tool while rivals bicker
By James Niccolai, IDG News Service, 10/24/06

Microsoft released the final version of its Windows Defender antispyware
tool on Tuesday, while security rivals squabbled about whether the company
has given them sufficient access to Windows Vista to build competing
products.

The release of the final version suggests that Microsoft thinks Windows
Defender is sufficiently stable and bug-free for mainstream use. The final
release fixes about 400 bugs in beta 2 of the product, which was released in
February. Beta versions of the program were downloaded 34 million times, a
Microsoft spokeswoman said.

Along with the bug fixes, customers using Windows XP and Windows 2003 get
two free support calls for Windows Defender. The product is no longer
supported for Windows 2000 users, since support for that OS ended in June,
Microsoft said. "

1. What does he mean "support for that OS [2000] ended in June"?
Surely, with critical updates for 2000 still coming through, Microsoft must
still be supporting it.

2. Do I now remove Windows Defender Beta and have done with it?

Thanks

Thanks Dave,

I don't know what the difference is between Mainstream and Extended Support,
but at least it looks as if support in one form or another will run until at
mid 2010 at the earliest, which is reasuring as I've recently switched to
2000 from 98SE and wish I'd done it years ago. I think 2000 Professional
is a lovely bit of kit.

As for Windows Defender, I'll see if the beta version continues to update
itself; if not, I'll see if the full version manages to run on 2000. And
if that doesn't work, I guess I'll run AdAware a bit more often and remain
vigilant when browsing.

Many thanks

Martin

A comment that AdAware can be set as a scheduled task to regularly run
thru the Control Panel.
