Windows Defender general availability

As many of you already know, we recently released the final "gold" version of
Windows Defender for English locales. We offer both a 32bit and 64bit
version. This release has been years in the making and we have fixed hundreds
of bugs since Beta 2 with your help.

Many have asked if there have been new featuers added. The short answer is
that we did not add any new features but we did make some changes. First, we
no longer support Windows 2000. Mainstream support for Windows 2000 ended in
June 2005, and we found that not many of our customers were on that platform.
For those running Windows 2000, we recommended an upgrade to Windows XP SP2
or Windows Server 2003 SP1 for the latest security enhacements. There are
also many 3rd party antispyware solutions that do support Windows 2000.

The second major change is that an additional WGA check was implemented. If
Windows Defender is installed onto a non-genuine Windows machine, Windows
Defender will only remove threats marked as severe. Low, Medium and High
threats will be detected, but not removed. An error message will also be
displayed in this case.

With this final release, we are also making a commitment to our customers to
help resolve any issues related to Windows Defender. As some of you have
noticed, we are offering 2 free phone support call incidents availalbe at no
charge (tolls may still apply). We will also start to roll this support out
internationally as our localized releases are published in the following
weeks and months. German and Japanese will be the first languages scheduled
for release, but we hope to have over 20 localized languages.

We will also turn on the "upgrade notification" in a week or so and start
upgrading current Beta 2 customers to the final release.

Thanks for you support of Windows Defender!

I am now running (and like very much) Windows Live OneCare version 1.5 - the
international one with a 180 day trial (being in Britain the other version
does not really work). Do I need Defender as well, as it tells me to remove
Live OneCare which I do not want to do.

So what is the alternative for the "ahem" not many customers on the windows
2000 platform?? Might it be to spent more money on an win xp upgrade ??
If it is not supported does that also mean it will not install on windows
2000 ?
If not, I hope that the not so many customers on the windows 2000 will all
raise their voice and request to have it wrking again on windows 2000.

The version of Windows One Care that you are using already has the spyware
scanner installed within the antivirus program, so you do not need Defender
installed. In fact, it would be redundant. An example of a similar set up
might be the new Spysweeper with Antivirus or Trend Micro's security system -
both have the AV and AS combined in a unified scan. If you at some point
choose to uninstall One Care, then of course Defender is free and you would
be able then to install it. One advantage to having the AV and AS combined is
that whenever One Care might be tested and compared to other AV products, it
would be a test of One Care's full detection ability, not just the AV part.
I'm still using the original version of One Care with the AV separate from
Defender, and it seems to me that you are using a more advanced product. I'm
hoping that it works out well and that perhaps the version that I am using on
subscription will eventually be upgraded. How is it working out for you?

G

so far, so good. I think I read somewhere that when activated (and it is not
possible to do this before the end of the trial period) the same subscription
would work on several computers. As most of us have more than one, that is
progress. So far I am pleased, as I am with the new IE7 which is vastly
better than the beta versions that rendered life almost impossible, as the
earlier ones would fetch old versions of a site, and would not work at all
with some financial/bank sites, sending me to Mozilla to get my bank details.
I am putting the new version from www.ideas.live.com on several laptops now

Glad to hear it's working well. I'm looking forward to having mine upgraded.
You are correct about the subscription: one subscription allows you to put
One Care on up to three computers. You only need to sign into the One Care
site using the net passport used to register the first time to access your
account. Then you are authorized to install it on additional computers. Very
nice.

Rob. I would say. "For `Ahem` delete in toto and insert `Progress`". Sad fact
of life my friend. Time to move on. If the OS don`t get you the hardware
requirements will ;)

Oh! And there`s always the security issues with older OSs.

Stu,

That's why I say th "G" in "Windows Defender [G]old" stands for Gamma.
Congradulations we are now Gamma testers.

Of course we wont have Deltas (Service Packs or Bug Fixs) for this product.
They will just call them UI/Engine updates, Yeah Right.

Anybody else out there think we should have had an RC (Release Candidate or
2)?

I believe that you do not. In fact--it won't install. I believe that

Gentlemen, I have one simple question: Is anything ever FINISHED? I have
seen similar concerns stated by users of Spysweeper, Ewido (AVG/AS), and
A-Squared during beta and after release of GM versions. Apparently the only
constant to be counted on is change ( which only sometimes brings
improvements).

LOL I have long been resigned to the fact that I am a perpetual beta
tester even when I am using GM or "final release" products. I can't get these
words out of my mind from an earlier time when I was very much into religion:
"in saecula saeculorum" - "world without end", or "unto the ages of ages".
LOL

Truth be told, it's about time the beta label was removed from Defender. Has
any other product been beta for as long as MSAS or Defender. I haven't been
around long enough to know, but I doubt there has been. We can now start
taking about updates, upgrades and improved detection and removal, or lack
thereof. There will always be plenty to talk about.

also many 3rd party antispyware solutions that do support
Windows
2000.

The second major change is that an additional WGA check was
implemented.
If
Windows Defender is installed onto a non-genuine Windows
machine,
Windows
Defender will only remove threats marked as severe. Low,
Medium
and High
threats will be detected, but not removed. An error message
will
also be
displayed in this case.

With this final release, we are also making a commitment to
our
customers
to
help resolve any issues related to Windows Defender. As some
of
you have
noticed, we are offering 2 free phone support call incidents
availalbe at
no
charge (tolls may still apply). We will also start to roll
this
support
out
internationally as our localized releases are published in the
following
weeks and months. German and Japanese will be the first
languages
scheduled
for release, but we hope to have over 20 localized languages.

We will also turn on the "upgrade notification" in a week or
so
and start
upgrading current Beta 2 customers to the final release.

Thanks for you support of Windows Defender!
