Windows Defender general availability

Hi Plun

"About MS they must clearly state that this is a "basic"
protection and nothing more...

It´s nothing for a user which frequently visits Internets
backyard and doesn't know
where he/she is....and clicks on everything....."

Agreed. Sometimes WD gives the impression of being about as efficient as
their Firewall. If WD is going to be taken seriously, present to the public
with comittment. If your product is up to the job, place your credentials
for all to see. The SpyBot/Adaware guys have the balls to tell you with
confidence what their software will protect you from and does the job as
advertised. What does the Windows Defender do? Tell you if it is `Awake` or
Resting`and only when awoken by third party software which it feels it should
interrogate. It`s almost like Monty Pythons parrot!! `Dead` or `Just
Resting`? No different from WinPatrol - except, WinPatrol doesn`t masquerade
as an AS program.

This is maybe "mission impossible" beacuse of human nature
and software....

But.......

It is possible to share knowledge without double moral and
clearly
state was this is about, if MS did that WD was OK.

Just read a list which Calamity Jane posted in DSL reports.

First about Zlobs.... ;) (not a word about prOn ;) )

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17163035

10 ways to get infected..... ;)

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15985921

I can understand todays vendors that why should they protect
users
which never learns.... ? and visits stupid places... ?

It´s equally stupid to try to remove infests with Adaware
and Spybot if the
bad guys changes the carrier, the zlob.... and they changes
it every day.

It must be a way to learn users more about "Human
stupidity".... ?!

Todays cleaning forums maybe also wants customers and Google
incomes but
it´s really depressing to see this endless stream with "users".

I thanks Calamity Jane for starting a knowledge campaign... ;)

Hi

I hope that we soon can see MS scanner within
AV-Comparatives testlab.

I have done som tests with Virustotal and common malware and
MS scanner seems to be "odd".

We will probably also have a better picture when users
visits cleaning forums
with WLOC installed.....

I also read that MS reorganize Trustworthy computing and
Security and
maybe it´s necessary to make it "trustworthy".... maybe
without beautiful colors...

I wondered where Calamity Jane had posted the final list, this was my
contribution.

"11 Do loan your laptop to the next door teenager (or babysitter, etc.) for
the weekend."

You always assume that I don't believe in user education, simply because I
state the obvious fact that it can never work to 100%, or even 50%
effectiveness. There will always be 'newbies', in the very young or newly
connected parts of the world. That's why MS needed something built-in to the
OS to attempt to warn the user and guide them, even if it can't detect all
malware to 100% effectiveness. You've always got the ability to replace it
with something else.

I applaud those who attempt to directly educate the public, but they're
fighting a battle that they'll never win. The recent Microsoft moves and
those planned for the future will have far more effect than all of these hard
working malware fighters put together. The problem is that only those who
update their PC will get the required help, be it XP or Vista.

People will continue to do as they've always done, no matter how hard you
try to change them. Protecting them despite this tendancy has always been a
hot topic of discussion in the Malware Helper back room forums. The only real
solution is to make sure something is in place to give effective warning when
there is an attack, no matter what the reason. Microsoft has attempted to
create this front line defense with Defender, and I think they've done a good
job with their initial attempt, which I'm also certain will improve with time.

The only people who seem to be fighting this are those who have a vested
interest in seeing it not work, including malware purveyors and 'security'
organizations who make a buck either way.

Hi, plun! It looks like testing for WOC at AV Comparative may be closer than
before since the beta WOC went International. Also, this newest beta version
contains both the AV and AS scanner in one module, so when it gets tested, it
should be the complete scope of its detections, not just the AV part. I
guess all still depends on when this International WOC version goes GM, but
it's closer than before. I'm currently using the US version of WOC with KIS
in reserve (I uninstalled it because it caused BSOD and then installed WOC).
For the next year I have subscriptions to both WOC and KIS, so if the testing
goes badly, well ---I have options.

Hi Bitman

Should our security vendors work with Haxdoors and Warezovs
or with users which installs codecs and Smitfraud....;)

The only laboratory I knows which handles them all is
Kasperskys lab.

http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatchlite?hour_offset=-2

Endless stream with mostly social engineering malware.

I believe in education, real education without any secrets.

Maybe we then have a small group of users which maybe is
lost.....

Windows Vista and UAC will be next little "toy" for the bad
guys to
disable.....

"To install this codec and to watch this prOn movie a
restart is needed..."

Happy Computing... ;)

Hi Paul

Well..... you are a educated user and knows the secrets behind
this little "tragedy"....

AV-Comparatives just tests real malicious code.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/ > Online results

What I knows they only tests if a vendor approves it.

TrendMicro has been in a conflict about testing procedures.
As I remembers it this was about heuristic detections and
what samples they used during a test.

The really big ones with real intelligence can control it
better then
small vendors.

Nevertheless interesting if MS shows up.....
