Mail merged fax field creates wrong TO: address format in outlook

OS: WinXP sp-1
E-mail: Outlook 2002 sp-2
WP: Word 2002 sp-2
Task: Word doc mail merge to Fax with WinXP fax.

Following ms workaround, I use the mail merge to e-mail
feature. The fax number is merged from an external source
in the [fax: 12345] format (tried to use excel and access
as the supporting storage for the db but net effect is
the same.
E-mail is created OK.
E-mail is not sent and is returned as indeliverable.
E-mail is sent to FAX: 12345 in the TO: field.
If you check the recipient address properties that was
automatially created though it is wrongly built.
You have, following the example:
Display name: FAX: 12345 and this is wrong !
E-mail address: FAX: 12345 and this is wrong!
E-mail Type: FAX and this is correct.

If I manually remove the "FAX: " part of the e-mail
address it goes flawlessly but I cannot do it for 2000
faxes I would like to merge fax.

Have you got a clue ???
Thanks for your help.

State the transports you have in your Outlook profile.
List the Steps you are using. Office XP has no merge to Fax option.
