Machine in Hibernation?(After bad shutdown)No USB/PS2 keyboard acc

Hello - hope anyone can help with my situation - Running XP Media Edition on
a Compaq Presario desktop(max 8 months old)......out of the blue, after a
frozen program and consequent 'bad' shutdown, machine will NOT
start....seemed to be keyboard problem? During initial BOOT get flash of the
lights on keyboard, and NORMALLY would then be steady light for
NUMLOC-instead-MOON on keyboard appears lit.....and stays lit...Continues on
to COMPAQ red screen where options are ESCAPE/F1 SetUp/System Restore....But
without keyboard access I am UNABLE to continue.....Next screen options are
XP Media Edition/ System Restore, but AGAIN I am UNABLE to choose
either...FINALLY, screen goes blank, except for single underscore at top left
as if at a DOS PROMPT?!?!?
The machine CAME with USB keyboard, I tried 5 OTHER USB keyboards, and 1 PS2
- all gave the same glowing MOON! Tried to start with EACH of the SIX USB
ports on machine with EACH keyboard, then tried a PS2 which did the same MOON
glow...(PS2 port had NEVER had a keyboard plugged into it) HP/COMPAQ
support suggests failed port, but ALL SIX USB and ONE PS2 to fail at the SAME
time?? On a machine that is LESS than a year old? Doesn't sound
feasible.... and lastly - - - have NO CLUE how it got into its Hibernation or
Standby state, as I don't THINK Hibernation was even ENABLED to begin with!!!

If ANYONE can throw me a bone here, I'm at MY wits end with this sleeping
machine!!!! THANX in advance!!

Hi Mark-- Thanks for suggestion - almost seems TOO simple...Not sure if
keyboard will let me go in safe, but will try the F8....Tried ESC, tried
F1....but keyboard goes right to MOON mode after flashing that it is
'there'....
