Shutdown Problem PS2 Mouse and Abit AN7 Motherboard

Hi All:

I just built a computer around a Abit AN7 motherboard. Although I'm very
happy with the performance, I've had problems with the computer shutting
down since I built it six months ago. It would just get to the "Windows is
shutting down" screen and hang.

Well I finally identified the problem. I have a IBM Wireless Keyboard and
Mouse and the latest drivers from IBM installed. However in testing this
past week, I discovered that if I also installed a PS2 keyboard and mouse,
the computer would shutdown correctly. Upon further testing, I discovered
that the problem was specifically tied to the presence of the PS2 mouse. I
can have the wireless keyboard and mouse installed, but I also must have the
PS2 mouse attached physically to the PS2 port on the AN7 to shutdown the
computer properly - otherwise it hangs. (The presence of a wired keyboard
did not matter.)

I have XP Professional SP2 installed, the latest drivers from IBM for the
wireless setup, and the latest BIOS for the AN7 from Abit. I currently just
have the PS2 mouse attached and hide it behind the computer - which resolves
the issue - but I would like to correct the problem.

Any ideas? Are there BIOS parameters or PS2 mouse driver settings that may
be causing the problem?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Does the Wireless receiver connect via a USB Channel ? Have
you checked your System Event log to see if a HID (Human
Interface Device) issue is logged ? Also, do you have the power
savings feature disabled on the USB channel that runs the receiver?

Hi -

Not sure if I can answer all your questions.

Yes, the wireless receiver does connect via USB.

I don't know how to check the System Event log. Could you help me with that
one?

I don't know how to disable the power savings feature on the USB channel. I
see that there are many setting in the driver located under the Device
Manager, but I see nothing that says "power savings". Is this a known issue
that the power savings on the USB should be disabled? And why would that
cause the presence of the PS2 mouse to matter to the shutdown?

Thanks for your help.

Hi All:

The problem has been resolved in the latest BIOS from Abit, released August
2004, version 17.

Thanks for all help.
