Lost wav files

Running XP Home with SP2. I have lost all but 2 of the Windows wav system
sound files. I checked the original XP Home CD and saw the files in there,
did a copy and paste of them all into the C/WINDOWS/Media folder, but they
would not play and I got the message; "windows cannot play the ***file, etc".
I did a search for all *.wav files and have several from the
C/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles but only 2 in the C/WINDOWS/Media folder. The
sounds are listed in the Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices/Sounds but
they will not play. How can I get them back?

I certainly can function without the sounds, but they help alert me when
working.
