MCI Error

I have a XP Pro machine where there are sounds associated with events but
they will not play and the preview button is grayed out. WAV's do play in
the Media Player so it appears it is not a codec issue.

I ran Windows Diag and it reported

Mixer: Mixer Volume Test:test failed, error code: 036009002
Open Failed

Diagnostics for Windows 4.06 A
Error Details:
MCI Error Code = 326
Undocumented MCI Failure

Thinking it was a sound driver issue, I removed it and installed a newer and
then the old, original driver with no success in resolving this.

The machine has SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio and is running Pro SP3,

Other sounds are played, like Flash, QuickTime, Windows Media so it doesn't
appear to be hardware related. And it did work once upon a time.

AVG finds no virus.

Any ideas?

Just in case anyone else has this issue any the future.....

I read a suggestion while searching Google of installing the K-Lite codec
pack. During the installation, it came up with a message that there were
entries in my registry preventing some sounds from being played...Would I
like to fix them. Answered Yes & it fixed it even though several utilities
like "Registry Mechanic" found no issues. I spent hours searching for an
answer so I just wanted to share this to maybe help someone else on down the
road
