Lost items in Notification area

I've lost several of the items that were in the Notification area of the
task bar, near the clock in the lower right. I've lost "volume", a popup
blocker, and a few things like that. Some things were not lost.


I right-clicked on the task bar, the task bar tab, under Notification area I
clicked "customize". The missing items are shown under "past items", but I
can't find a way to get them back. I changed them to "always show", but
they still don't show up in the notification area.

I've rebooted and I did a system restore to the earliest one I had, but that
didn't fix it.

How can I get those things back in the "notification area"?

I found out how to get "volume" back, but I've been trying to reinstall the
popup blocker to get its icon back, so far without sucess.
