Vol icon in notification area

I lost the volume icon in the task bar on the right (notification area) and I
can't get it back. Any help will be appreaciated? I did properties, customize
in the notification area and set Volume to be always on, but it still doesn't
come up.

spike,

Try Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Volume Tab, and put a
check in "Place volume icon in the taskbar".

As an addendum to the previous advice, the volume icon sometimes
seems to disappear of its own accord. Don't ask me why!

If you discover that the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" box
is checked already, you should uncheck it and save the change.
Then, return to "Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices" and
check the box again.

Other useful tools are available at

and Line 294 (right) might resolve this problem.

I did that and rebooted and rechecked it and it came back, but then I
shutdown and came up the next day and it was gone again.

Then you probably need to update or reinstall the drivers for the sound
card.
