Losing Icons in Notification area after updates

I have been having difficulties when installing windows updates.

After installing, I am often losing the icons in my tray notification area.
Even though I go to customize notification area and select "Always Show" for
items such as my volume bar, the icons do not appear.

The only way I am able to have these icons show up again is doing a restore
point, which unfortunately means that I am not installing the security
updates needed.

Can any one help me with this?

Thanks.

Icon apear in the notication area (aka system tray)because they are
specifically designed to do so,
and a "friendly" will have a configuration option that enables or disables
it's
appearance in the system tray.
The windows volume control can be enabled/disabled from with the
"Sounds and Audio Device Properties" window found in the Control Panel

But some programs are designed to display there status in the system tray
instead of the taskbar
period.
If such a program's icon isn't in system tray (whether it's hidden or not),
then you need to mak sure
the program is loading (if it's not loading at startup and is supposed to ,
then check msconfig.exe).

You can manually enable the volume icon for the Notification Area by
following these steps:

1 - From the Start Menu, click Control Panel
2 - Select Sounds and Audio Devices
3 - Tick the box labelled "Place voulme icon in the taskbar"

For your other icons, I would recommend checking the individual program's
options for a way to enable them in the Notification Area.

Sigh.... and alas... I have tried these very things including making sure
that my "Sow the volume control" after these updates and it still does not
appear.

In fact, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense as to the rhyme or reason
for why certain icons disappear. And, as stated earlier, trying to select
them to "always show" hasn't changed this problem.

Further the only change to my computer when this happens is doing a windows
update which means I all ready have these setting set up to show in the
notification area.

I have looked at my msconfig and that doesn't appear to be the problem either.

Thank you for your help. Hopefully I will soon expose the litle gremlin
living in my windows xp operating system.

Thanks for your help Darth.

Unfortunately, getting my sound control to show doesn't seem to work as this
option is all ready selected.

This is a known problem with Windows XP, there are many article written
about it on the internet. I am going to provid some links concerning
this. The easiest way to over come this is to Log off and log back in.
It's a pain but it solves the problem. Also in the articles you will
notice that they suggest disabling two services, SSDP Discovery Service
and Universal Plug and play. Here are the links about this topic that I
have: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/trayicons.htm and
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSystray.htm. I went nuts over this issue and
the disabling of the services worked on my PC. Hope this helps :)

Thank you so very much. I tried to find information on this on the windows
site as well as on the net, but I suppose my keyword searches weren't
specific enough or too specific. I am certain that one of these will resolve
the problem as I know that I am using automatic logon.
