In general you don't.
Some programs, particularly some programs that run in the background,
manifest themselves by an icon in the System Tray (aka Notification Area),
others don't. In general it's the program's choice as to whether it appears
on the System Tray or the main part of the Task Bar. You don't get the
choice.
However there is third-party software that lets you choose to put a
program's icon in the tray.
