After installing itunes on pc (windows XP) lost the D drive from my Computer.
In device manager I am getting the following message - Windows successfully
loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware
device. (Code 41). Through device manager have tried the following
- updated drive
- uninstalled and rebooted

but have had no success. Can anyone please help

Might try to open the computer up (after turning it off of course) and
making sure the power and data cables are tight.
Lots of vibration in there, its possible it came loose enough to lose
connection.

iTunes installs an ASPI layer which can cause serious problems!

search in Google for
"remove GEARAspiWDM.sys"
GEAR offers uninstaller for their ASPI layer filter.

Once the GEAR ASPI layer is removed, iTunes will remind you that CD burning
software is missing (during each start-up). Ignore this and don't reinstall
iTunes. Of course You won't be able to burn CDs from iTunes.
