Windows can't find my DVD drive

Running Windows Xp pro; service pack 2. I have two dvd drives; one
external and one internal. Don't really use them much as I can't even
remember when I used them last. Today; I bought a new printer. When I
attempted to put the installation disk in the external Dvd drive;
nothing happened. After eventually checking my device manager; I noticed
that both drives were showing a error. Upon clicking on the drives this
error box would pop up " Windows successfully loaded the device drivers
for this Hdw but cannot find the Hdw device. Code 41"

I tried uninstalling the drives and reinstalling via the "Add New Hdw"
feature. Windows did reinstall; but the same error box popped up. I then
uninstalled them again a rebooted. Checked the Device Manager and the
same error box was there.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the external Dvd will produce the usual
"Beep" when a piece of Hdw is connected/disconnected.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

"You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive,
or you receive an error message" (Error codes: 19, 31, 32, 39 or 41)

If no joy then I would suggest un-stalling the driver, shutdown the PC
and removing the cable from the CD-R and or the CD-RW drives,
and then reboot Windows.

Shut down Windows and turn off the PC one more time
and re-connect the cable to the CD-R and CD-RW drives.

Now Power up and let Windows re-discover the devices and install the
drivers.

Also: CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device
