Losing IP address or something like that

Twice now an icon has showed up on my systray indicating a loss of
connectivity (and it was correct; I couldn't access any web pages or email).

When I clicked on the icon and then clicked details, it said something about
a loss of my IP address or something like that. The first time, I
disconnected the cable going from my broadband cable modem to my computer
and reconnected it and all went fine.

But a few hours later, it happened again. The icon also gave me an option to
"repair" the problem to reset my IP address. I did this and now all is
working well (for the last hour anyway).

Does anyone know what's going on?? Am I heading for some kind of hardware
failure?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP Home. I've had it about 15 months. I
think it is still under warranty (2 years, I think).

Whatever is supplying your IP address is either changing it or losing it
somehow, so you have to reconnect to get the ip address back so Windows can
see it.

I'd bet that it's either your cable modem or router that's having hardware
issues, or your cable company that's moving around IP addresses and for some
reason you're not getting reconnected automatically.

It might just be a momentary problem, but if it persists, I'd suggest
calling the cable company and see what they have to say/

Do you have a LAN?
Power off modem, router, pc; then power on just the modem for 2 minutes.
then the router, wait; then the pc. How's that?

I don't have a router. It's just little old me and my home computer and my
cable company.

If it happens again, I'll do the power off power on thing.

Thanks.
